Foster Puppies & Kittens
Without Mothers
Bottle Feeding a Kitten
Sometimes we receive litters of puppies and kittens that are too
young to eat dry food, and there is no mother dog or cat available
to feed them. At our shelter, we do not have enough staff to give
these babies the time and attention they require.
Very young puppies and kittens
require frequent bottle feedings (several times a day), and lots
of love and special care. In these situations, we rely on volunteer
foster parents, who take the animals home and care for them until
they are old enough to be adopted.
Without foster homes, a puppy
or kitten without a mother would not survive.
Foster Puppies &
Kittens With Mothers
A much easier foster situation is caring for a mother and her babies
~ the mom does so much of the work! When we get dogs and cats with
brand new litters of puppies and kittens, we realize that our animal
shelter is not the ideal situation. We prefer that the mom and babies
go to a foster home where they can be socialized to other animals and
people in a home environment.
Limitless Rewards
The experiences a foster parent provides for a puppies or kittens builds
a foundation that impacts the rest of their lives. Being a foster parent
is not always an easy job, but it is very rewarding. One foster parent
said that the hardest thing about fostering puppies and kittens is
giving them up...
How To Sign Up
We usually don't get much (if any) advance notice about incoming animals
that need fostering, so ideally, we need a list of people who can be "on
call" in case we need help. If you would like to sign up to be
on our Foster Homes list, please email
Watauga Humane Society with the following information:
- Name
- Phone Number
- Description of Accomodations Available for Fostered Puppies
and KittensPreference of Cat, Dog, or Both
- Willing to bottle-feed or prefer mom & babies?
We hope you will find room in your heart (and home) to foster homeless puppies
and kittens!
